Developer Advisory: HTML Tag Update in Block Templates for WooCommerce 9.0

From the Woo Developer Blog, by Albert Juhé Lluveras

“In WooCommerce 9.0, schedule for release on June 11th, 2024, we will be changing the main HTML tag from <div> to <main> in several block templates in an effort to improve accessibility.”

Accessibility Improvement

“The <main> tag defines the central content of a page, providing better support for assistive technologies such as screen readers. This change enhances navigation for users relying on these technologies, aligning with our commitment to accessibility.”

How to bulk update products in WooCommerce

From the General Woo Blog, by Kathryn Marr

“Keeping your product catalog up to date is a key part of running a WooCommerce store. Sometimes, you may need to make store-wide changes or update all products in a certain category. For instance, you might have to add a new size to all of your T-shirts or increase the price of all mugs. Applying these changes one product at a time can be tedious and time-consuming.

The good news is that with WooCommerce, you don’t have to manually update individual products. WooCommerce enables you to bulk update your products, changing values like availability, stock quantities, price, and more. Additionally, you can use a Woo extension or a WooCommerce bulk edit plugin to access more advanced bulk editing features.”

Why Shopify Headless Is Cementing Itself As The New Mainstay In E-Commerce

From Forbes.com, by Brandon Batchelor

“Unlike a traditional Shopify store, where the user is bound by proprietary constraints such as coding, the overall wireframe of the site, features, functions, apps and more, headless differs. Instead, headless gives users complete technological control of Shopify’s robust features, allowing for total customization from top to bottom with few guardrails or limitations.

The result is a truly headless product that essentially allows businesses to take advantage of the billions of dollars in research and development that has gone into making Shopify a go-to platform. With the right development team, vision and budget, the sky is the limit as to how far a business can take their headless site on this platform.”

How to Add Smooth Scrolling Anchor Links to Your Website

From WordPress.com, by Jeremy Anderberg

“An ‘anchor’ link is a link that takes readers to a specific spot on the same page (rather than taking them to a new page altogether). It’s like a shortcut. In most cases, clicking that link brings readers to the desired place with an abrupt jump. In today’s Build and Beyond video, Jamie Marsland shows you how to make that transition a smooth scroll instead of a jump, making for a more pleasant reading and browsing experience.”

Top 15 Ways To Secure A WordPress Site

From Search Engine Journal

“Hackers and malicious actors are relentless in their attempts to gain access to websites and their sensitive data. The result? We are currently seeing an unprecedented amount of cyber security attacks.

To put it in perspective, Wordfence blocked more than 100 billion password spray attacks in 2023, and it is estimated that there are an average of 30,000 new websites hacked every day.

It is an issue that affects businesses of all sizes. Many ransomware attacks target large companies for a bigger payoff, but small and medium businesses provide an easier target for hackers due to their lack of resources and security expertise.”

Microsoft Will Use AI Copilot to Track and ‘Recall’ Everything Windows Users Do

From Headline News

Microsoft wants laptop users to get so comfortable with its artificial intelligence chatbot that it will remember everything you’re doing on your computer and help figure out what you want to do next.

The software giant on Monday revealed an upgraded version of Copilot, its AI assistant, as it confronts heightened competition from Big Tech rivals in pitching generative AI technology that can compose documents, make images and serve as a lifelike personal assistant at work or home.

The announcements ahead of Microsoft’s annual Build developer conference in Seattle centered on imbuing AI features into a product where Microsoft already has the eyes of millions of consumers: the Windows operating system for personal computers.

The new features will include Windows Recall, enabling the AI assistant to “access virtually what you have seen or done on your PC in a way that feels like having photographic memory.”
