What is the Metaverse?

“In its current meaning, Metaverse generally refers to the concept of a highly immersive virtual world where people gather to socialize, play, and work.” ~ Merriam-Webster

Common Terms Relative To A Metaverse:

WEB 3, Cyberspace, Virtual Reality, Alternate Reality Omniverse, The Matrix Blockchain, NFTs, Crypto Currencies

The Term Metaverse is believed to have been originally used in a novel titled “Snow Crash” by Neal Stephenson, published 1992. In the book the author envisioned a computer generated universe.

The Metaverse is not just one thing. There are many definitions and many different Metaverses, but the general consensus refers to interactive digital environments that can be adapted & evolved in a multitude of ways.

Is the Metaverse transformational?

Possibly, or at least it is likely to be a generational evolution of the internet. In some ways the Metaverse is just the latest iteration of what has previously been referred to as cyperspace or cybernetics amongst other names. As technology advances and computer power continues to grow, new digital environments are being created with new ways to interact within these digital worlds.

Will the Metaverse change Business & Culture?

The answer is likely yes, but how soon and to what extend is unclear. Given the massive about of money that is being invested in Metaverse projects coupled with rapid advances in computer technology, it is possible that metaverse experience could become quite common by the end of this decade.

There is already digital economies that exist in these so called Metaverses where people create, buy and sell various goods and services. These digital economies are sure to grow over time with more and more e-commerce applications following along.

Which Companies are investing in the Metaverse?

Pretty much all the big tech companies are focusing on the Metaverse. Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Epic Games, Roblox, Meta (Facebook) as well as others have made sizable acquisitions & investments in this area. There are also hundreds if not thousands of opensource projects with Sandbox and Decentraland being among the largest.

What is the Metaverse?

“In its current meaning, Metaverse generally refers to the concept of a highly immersive virtual world where people gather to socialize, play, and work.” ~ Merriam-Webster
